Hit on ‘21′
Written by Gorman on April 17, 2008Having not read the Ben Mezrich book on which the movie 21 was based, “Bringing Down The House,” I was pleasantly surprised when I didn’t have every single plot development figured out ahead of time.
The movie tell the story of Ben Campbell (played by Across the Universe’s Jim Sturgess, a mathematical whiz from MIT who is half Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker, half Russell Crowe’s John Nash (A Beautiful Mind). Campbell fears his lifelong dream of making Harvard Medical School won’t happen because he lacks the $300,000 to swing the tuition.
Campbell’s teacher, Micky Rosa (played by Kevin Spacey), takes notice of Campbell’s high octane intellect and invites him into a card-counting group–with a little help from Jill (Kate Bosworth, co-starring her third movie with Spacey), on whom Campbell just so happened to already have a crush.
At first Laurence Fishburne seemed to be overkill for the role of security contractor Cole Williams, but it’s a slow burn role, and, for me, his was easily the most likeable character by the end of the movie.
Bottom line: If you don’t get out to see it in the theaters, 21 is a definite rent.
